Tote bags can often be found with handles that are sewn into the top of the bag. These are better for light objects since the stitching which attaches the handles can become weak over time. If you want to carry heavy things or find a truly durable bag, look for handles that go all the way around the bag. A handle made of fabric tape that loops under the bag and up the sides to form loops will be much stronger. This reinforces the bottom of the bag, and uses more stitches to keep the handles attached.
How much will you be stowing in your tote? Size can matter especially if weight is an issue. Heavy duty fabrics are durable but they can be heavy as well. Large bags can be versatile but they can weigh too much if they are filled with gear.
There are different totes available for different uses. If you think you will need to be able to clean the tote out, consider a plasticized interior that wipes down well. If you will be carrying wet or damp items, you should think about a tote bag that allows for air to reach the contents to keep them from becoming mildewed.
One of the main drawbacks to a tote is its lack of interior dividers. Most tote bags are meant to be casual and not used as a purse the majority of the time. Because of this fact a tote bag lacks many of the same dividers and pockets that a more typical purse would have. You can get around this by getting a smaller bag to keep inside your tote. There are many good purse organizers on the market to choose from.
If you want a fun and casual way to get your gear from Point A to Point B, consider a tote bag. They can be roomy and relaxed and best of all they are good for the environment. They make a good book bag as well as a good grocery bag.
