The world of designer handbags can get pretty ugly. The leather goods company Coach was founded in 1941. The original concept was a wholesale leather goods using typical leathers of the time in standard colors. In recent years, the Coach lifestyle has leaked overseas, down under and into the Great White North.
Now known for their logo handbags and often bright color schemes, the company came to be under the direction of ’60s mover-and-shaker Bonnie Cashin. She originally declined, as Cashin was high in demand, working with several design houses at the time. After being hired by Coach, Cashin elevated the label to a new place with her stylistic approach. Unlike many leather goods companies of the time, Cashin designed bags in various leathers and in sorbet colors like yellow, pink and green. Creating leather goods that were outstanding in both quality and design, Cashin took the brand further than just a good bag a woman would carry. The Coach name created coordinating wallets, silk scarves and key fobs, thus creating a lifestyle, not just a name. Inspired by pulling the top of a convertible down, Cashin incorporated a brass signature turnlock on purses, accessories and apparel. This turnlock is still a signature of the Coach and is used on staple handbags , as well as seasonal items.
What has made Coach so prevalent in society is the fact that it’s affordable luxury. Most bags top out at $600, with accessories ranging far lower on the scale. This allows any woman to have a piece of the brand, whether it’s hanging from her key or hitting the pavement by way of shoes. With luxury brands growing at an alarming rate, and prices climbing, Coach remains consistent with quality and price.
In recent years the brand has extended far past their previous ceiling prices that were in the hundreds to offer limited edition handbags in exotic skins costing in the four digits. This was a big step for Coach, as it is now channeling itself as the luxury goods brand it was known as in early ’60s, not just a suburban shopping mall store. The addition of their Legacy store (which stocks exclusively the Coach Legacy collection) on Bleeker Street in Manhattan proves that the brand is able to reach into the lives of many women, all whom love the brand and what it represents. The brand now extends into beauty products with the introduction of a fragrance and a few cosmetics as well.
Repairs are offered on any authentic Coach handbags via their stores, with clients paying a $20 shipping fee. Bags beyond repair are typically serviced with a comparable gift card, proving that stellar service and great product is how a handbag company is able to bounce back with a vengeance.
