Horseneck Beach State Reservation is one of the busiest public properties in the state of Massachusetts. It is located in the southwest reaches of Buzzards Bay, is south of Boston and is just miles from Rhode Island. Why is it this state park so popular? Let’s look at the top five reasons.
The Beach. This is a no brainer really. Two full miles of oceanfront beach that is able to handle the large number of visitors that come on hot summer weekends. If you arrive early enough you can easily find a good spot. If you arrive late in the morning or in the early afternoon you will likely have to walk a ways from your car to find an open patch of sand.
Parking. This is an important part of what allows the park to continue, year after year, to attract so many visitors. You pay a flat free to get into the park and once you are in there are no parking meters to feed quarters to every so many hours nor do you have to drive around for half an hour looking for an empty spot.
Camping. There is a 100 site campground in Horseneck Beach State Reservation. It is just behind the beach dunes, so it not open to the ocean. Sill you get the sea breeze, smells and sounds of the ocean from your campsite even if you can’t quite see the water from your spot. There are shower facilities, bathrooms and places to wash your camping utensils. The campground is open from mid May through mid October.
Birdwatching. The park is a great bird watching location. Migrants, song birds, shorebirds and other species can all be found within Horseneck Beach park. It can be a challenge to get away from the crowd during a busy summer weekend. It can be a bit easier if you can plan your trip for a weekday if you want to see birds here during the summer.
Memories. How many memories do you have about being at the beach? If you don’t have any you should start getting some right away. For those of you that have spent times past at the beach then you know it’s a great place to kick back and take it easy. If you are able to bring your children and allow them to experience the sea and the sand, it can make an impression in your mind that sticks with you and creates a nice lasting memory.
